Nine Minton Arts & Crafts Period Encaustic Ceramic Tiles, England Circa 1875
A group of nine Minton Arts & Crafts period encaustic ceramic tiles decorated with geometric motifs in a striking palette of royal blue, tan, white & terracotta, one tile being of a slightly different pattern which could be used to centre the remaining eight. All bearing impressed factory marks on the reverse noting MINTON & CO. PATENT. STOKE UPON TRENT. Each measuring 6” x 6” x .75”.
(The encaustic method is a lengthy process that first involves moulding each tile with a handmade pattern, then filling in each individual segment of the pattern by hand with coloured liquid clay (slip), after which each tile is then left to dry before being fired in a kiln for approximately 24 hours).
