A Large Chinese Famille Jaune ‘Eight Horses of Wang Mu’ Jingdezhen Porcelain Vase, Circa 1970
The large baluster shaped body finely decorated with hand painted enamels depicting the ‘Eight Horses of Wang Mu’ against a treed & mountainous landscape, together with rows of verses in hand painted calligraphy, the base & neck profusely decorated with geometric & floral motifs against a brightly coloured yellow ground. The underside of the base stamped with the red seal Jingdezhen character mark referencing ‘Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi’ (China Jingdezhen made). Height, 24”.
Emperor Wang Mu was the 5th Emperor of the Zhao Dynasty, who dreamed of being an immortal and driving his 8 stallions (all possessing different powers) on a chariot to meet Xi Wangmu – Goddess of the West.
