Harbour View with Sailboats on the South Coast of France, G. Marchand

A very charming and well executed 20th century harbour view on the south coast of France, possibly in the region of Olonne-sur-Mer on the Vendee Coast, oil on canvas, signed bottom left 'G. Marchand' for George Marchand, set within a painted and carved wooden frame. 

Dimensions: (sight) 17.5” high x 21.25" wide, framed dimensions 26.5” high x 30” wide x 1.75” deep. 

There is little substantive information on the artist George Marchand, other than he was born in Germany in 1838 and later immigrated to San Francisco in 1880. There is apparently a listing for George Marchand in 'Artists in California 1786-1940’ by Edan Hughes. Other recorded works by this artist include 'Marligues Pais de Marseilles, Canal St Sebastien' and 'La Chaume Sables D’Olonne'.P0056
