In the Indian Buddhist religion Avalokiteshvara is a male bodhisattva, however in Chinese Buddhism he takes the form of the female Bodhisattva, Guanyin - ‘The One Who Hears the Cries of the World’. The Bodhisattva of Compassion shown attired in a flowing robe, her face exuding a sense of enlightened contemplation, seated in a meditative pose with hands folded in Dyana Mudra while holding a vase containing the Elixir of Compassion together with another ritualistic element raised atop a stylized cloud.
