‘Draft Horse, Haying’ Harry Fidler, British RI RBA

 

A large & finely executed ’plein air’ impressionist genre scene painted in the ‘impasto’ technique, depicting a farmer leading his draft horse through an open field pulling a burgeoning haycart. Fidler has skillfully captured the physicality of his two subjects as they toil in the warm, ambient light of the summer’s mid day sun.

Oil on canvas, signed lower left and set within what appears to be its original carved wood frame.

Harry Fidler (1856-1935) attended Herkomer’s Art School in Bushey, Hertfordshire and later travelled to St. Ives where he painted several rural landscapes, quite often incorporating workhorses in his compositions.

He was a member of The Royal Institute of Oi Painters (RI) and The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). He exhibited works at The London Royal Academy (RA), and the New English Art Club (NEAC) as well as at the Paris Salon.
