An Original 19th Century Thomas Milner Patented Iron Safety Box, UK Circa 1840
Ruggedly constructed of sheet iron with soldered seams & fitted with twin hinged carrying handles and a hinged lid, the lids clasp bearing stamped manufacturers marks, the underside of the lid retaining its original factory paper label. In very good overall condition and exhibiting an old untouched surface inside & out. Dimensions, 11.5” high x 18.5” wide x 14” deep. Weighs approximately 25 pounds. Aside from its intended use, this would make for a very interesting industrial style tantalus or decanter box.

Thomas Milner was a tinsmith & metal box maker originally from Sheffield, then moved to Liverpool in 1830 where he began producing sheet iron safety boxes that incorporated his newly patented fire-resistant composition. After Thomas’s death in 1849 his son William took over production and renamed the business Milner & Son.
