An Exceptionally Fine 19th Century Taizan Satsuma Cylinder Vase, Meiji Period (1868-1912)
The large cylindrical stoneware body richly decorated in enamels depicting songbirds & cherry blossoms against a progressively darkening blue ground, rising to a flaring shoulder beneath a narrow waisted neck decorated with an enamel brocade. The underside of the base signed in characters for works carried out during the direction of Takahashi Yohei (1856-1922), the 9th generation family elder.
Height, 11.75” high.
The Taizan kiln in Kyoto was first opened in 1673 by Takahashi Tokuro, who produced wares under the name Taizan Tokhei. The family continued to produce high quality ware for 9 generations, well into the middle of the Meiji Period but then ceased production in 1895.
