  • An Exceptional 19th Century Hand-Carved Figure of Guanyin, China Circa 1880

     

    An exceptionally fine hand carved ivory figure of Guanyin “The One Who Hears the Cries of the World”, shown attired in finely sculpted flowing robes, a beaded necklace around her neck and hair in high chignon above an almond shaped face with a serene & meditative expression.

    Her left hand is raised in the Shuni Mudra gesture (Mudra of Patience), while in her right hand she pours a vase of pure water (The Nectar of Life) into the open mouth of a dragon, signifying flowing energy & life force (Chi). Minor distress to the neck noted. Shown standing next to her is the attendant Sudhana (Child of Wealth) and mounted overall atop an associated carved wood base. Height,10.75” high. Overall height with base, 12”.                                                                      

    This sculpture is regarded as one of the eight auspicious symbols denoting good fortune.
