  • An Early 18th Century Bannister Back Open Armchair, Northeastern USA Circa 1720

     

    The peg-constructed maple frame featuring a richly carved crest rail with scrolled & foliate motifs, over vertical bar splats sided by turned & block-carved stiles, the down-swept open armrests terminating to robustly carved & scrolled grips. Raised overall upon stile supports terminating to C-scroll carved front feet & square rear feet, all braced by turned & block-carved stretchers.

    Exhibiting a fine old surface & patina overall.

    Dimensions, 51” high x 26.5” wide (across the arms), seat height 17”.

    (Early conservation noted to backs of the stiles & across the lower rail or shoe).
