An Amusing Japanese Netsuke in the Form of an Octopus, Taisho Period (1912-1925)
The hand carved boxwood netsuke deftly rendered in the form of an octopus, decorated overall with a reddish stained surface with blackened eyes and a furrowed brow, which combined effects an amusing angry expression. Each of the tentacles is detailed with individually carved suckers, the underside showing a carved motif which may be intended to be its beak or perhaps a stylized makers mark. Measuring 1” high x 1.5” diameter.
