A Very Good Louis XV Period Panelled Buffet in Oak, France Circa 1740
A Very Good Louis XV Period Panelled Buffet in Oak, France Circa 1740
A very handsome & diminutive 18th century Louis XV oak buffet, demonstrating excellent form, fine proportions & superior colour. The panelled case showing traditional peg-joined mortise & tenon construction, the framed sides inset with floating panels, the front featuring twin hand-carved fluted pilasters flanking a pair of panelled doors with striking hand-carved rectilinear raised moldings. Both doors are hung on barrel hinges opening to a shelved interior, the right-hand door having a foliate ormolu escutcheon fronting a functioning albeit later lock mechanism & key. Raised overall on cabriole front supports & shaped rear supports braced by subtly carved front & side rails. In extremely good overall condition, noting early & later conservation consistent with its 280 plus year of use.
Dimensions, 31" high x 38" wide x 22.5" deep.
The modest scale of this charming 18th century French buffet allows it to be placed comfortably in a number of smaller spaces, such as in a foyer or on the top of a landing.
