A Very Good 19th Century Double Sided Portrait Miniature of George IV as Prince of Wales, together with his 1st Wife Maria Anne Fitzherbert, Signed R.Cosway.
The obverse showing George IV as Prince of Wales (1762-1830), attired in fancy 'Prince Florizel' costume, wearing a silk doublet over a white shirt with high collar, the Star of the Garter pinned to his left breast, his powdered hair beneath a broad rimmed black hat trimmed with white plumes. The reverse showing that of Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756-1837),1st wife of George, Prince of Wales, shown wearing a white dress with frilled collar, a blue ribbon at her waist and pearls around her neckline, her wide brimmed straw bonnet with blue ribbons & ostrich plumes over her powdered hair. Both finely painted in watercolour on ivory, (spuriously) signed R. Cosway (for esteemed 19th century British miniaturist & portrait artist Richard Cosway.
Set within a repousse silvered locket, sight dimensions 2.1/8” high x 1.75” wide, locket dimensions 2.5” high x 2.1/8” wide.
Richard Cosway (1742-1881) was elected to the Royal Academy of London in 1771 and became the most successful British miniature portrait artist of the Regency Period (1811-1820). He was also chosen as the official arts advisor by George, Prince of Wales, and supervised the decorative components of the Prince of Wales Official Residence, Carleton House.
