SOLD
A Very Fine and Important 19th Century Fold Over Tea Table in Cuban Mahogany, Philadelphia Circa 1825
The canted top of richly figured radiating veneers opening to a conforming panel above a cavetto moulded frieze, raised atop double lyre-shaped supports strung with brass ‘strings’ rising from a plinth base decorated with a carved anthemia motif. Raised overall atop four hipped & splayed supports terminating to original paw-shaped brass toe-caps and castors. Height: 29.5” Width: 35.5” Depth: 18” (36” open).
Note: the use of two open lyre supports is somewhat unusual, as tables of this design often incorporated a solid lyre-shaped panel in the back, thereby making this is a relatively more elegant and sophisticated example than most
Provenance: Purchased by Ernest Johnson Antiques through direct descent from the family of Sir John Thompson (1845-1894), Former Prime Minister of Canada from 1892-94.
