A very charming 19th century portrait of Saint Bernard, oil on canvas signed & dated bottom right 'Lily Irene Jackson 1893', set within its original and exceptionally fine water-gilded gallery frame, the reverse showing remnants of an old paper auction label dated Oct. 1928, together with stencilled auction reference numbers to the far right. Canvas dimensions, 14” x 17”, framed dimensions, 24” x 27” x 3.25”
Lily Irene Jackson (1848-1928) was the daughter of John Jay Jackson Jr., a prominent member of the Jackson family who in 1861 was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Federal Judge for Northwestern Virginia & West Virginia.
Lily Jackson was best known for her animal portraits & floral studies and exhibited works at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. She formed the Parkersburg Art Society in 1887 and was elected president in 1892. Her work is represented in the West Virginia State Museum in Charleston, The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History in Parkersburg and in other institutions.Please contact us by either phone at
