A tin glazed ceramic Grand Tour desk top model of the Capitoline Lion, showing the classical recumbent figure outstretched atop an integral rectangular plinth base. The underside of the base showing reference inventory numbers from a previous private collection. Measuring 2.75” high x 5.5” wide x 3.75” deep.
The origin of the Capitoline Lion is derived from an ancient marble group known as 'Lion Attacking a Horse' 325-300 B.C., discovered during the 16th century on Capitoline Hill in Rome. It is now considered to be the iconic symbol of Rome and is housed in the permanent collection of the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
