A Finely Carved & Gilded 19th Century Giltwood Buddha, Burmese, Circa 1890

 

An exceptionally fine hand carved, black lacquered & gilded Shan style buddha, the face effecting a serene meditative expression, the body adorned with a richly detailed monastic robe and wearing an ushnisha rising to a detachable spire. Seated in the Bhumisparhsa mudra position atop a lotus-blossom carved base, the right hand touching the ground to summon Sthavara - the Earth Goddess, with the left hand in dhyana mudra – suggesting a being in a deep meditative state.
