A Fine Victorian Sterling Silver Snuff Box Made for The Great Exhibition of 1851
A fine 19th century sterling silver snuff box made specifically for the Great Exhibition of 1851 held at the Crystal Palace, London. The lid engraved with a finely detailed image of the Crystal Palace within a border of hand chased foliate motifs, opening on precisely made barrel hinges, revealing a gilded interior with Birmingham hallmarks, date mark for 1850 and makers marks for Foxall & Company. The reverse decorated with a hand chased foliate border surrounding engine turned geometric motifs centred by a blank cartouche (suitable for monogramming). Dimensions, 2.75” wide x 1.5” deep x .5” high.
It is perhaps worth noting here that the silversmithing firm of Foxall & Company manufactured wares for a very brief period, from 1850-1853.
