SOLD
A Fine Set of Eight Georgian-Style Mahogany Framed Dining Chairs, English Circa 1870
The set consists of six side chairs and two open arm chairs in finely grained solid mahogany, all having drop-in seats. All in fine condition and having a warm mellow patina overall.
Provenance: The Estate of Alfred Rive, B.A., M.Litt., Ph.D., LL.D (1898-1970), thence by descent to family, then purchased directly by Ernest Johnson Antiques.
Alfred Rive had a distinguished career in the Canadian Foreign Service becoming part of the Canadian permanent delegation to the League of Nations in Geneva, (1935-1940) and Canadian High Commissioner in Wellington, New Zealand (1946-53). He was later appointed Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 1955-63.
He married Harriot Hopkinson in 1939, daughter of noted American artist Charles Hopkinson of Boston Massachusetts, an associate and contemporary of John Singer Sargent.
Currently OffsiteNote: It is relatively scarce to find such a fine and complete set of eight dedicated dining chairs in this condition given their age and utilitarian use, as well as the fact that large sets are quite often divided amongst family when passed down from one generation to the next.
