A Fine Pair of 19th Century Grand Tour Miniature Bronzes of The Pugilists, Italy Circa 1840
These diminutive classical bronze figures of the mythological boxers Creugas of Durres & Damoxenos of Syracuse, are after the original marble sculptures executed by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), and subsequently purchased by Pope Pius VII in 1802. Both are extremely well cast and demonstrate excellent scale, well defined musculature & chiselled features, affixed to circular plinth bases and exhibiting a very fine warm brown patina overall with areas of rubbing consistent with their age. Dimensions, 5” high x 2” diameter (across the base).
