A Fine George III Sterling Silver Wine Funnel by Robert & Samuel Hennell, London 1808
A fine & complete George III sterling silver wine funnel, showing a plain bowl with a pierced basin rising to a reeded rim & flattened thumbpiece. The underside of the bowl having a conforming circular foot that accepts a removable muslin ring, together with its detachable funnel stem. The bowl bearing London hallmarks with date letter for 1808 and makers marks for noted London silversmiths Robert Hennell 1st & Samuel Hennell, the funnel showing partially rubbed hallmarks but with consistent makers marks. Dimensions, 4.75” high x 3.5” diameter. Weight, 90.5 grams.
The Hennell family of silversmiths are regarded as being one of Britain’s most esteemed silversmithing firms, with its history dating back to 1728.
Postscript: The aforementioned ‘muslin ring’ is an integral part of an early sterling silver wine funnel, which is used to secure a piece of muslin or cheesecloth between the basin & the stem in order to properly filter out sediment. Muslin rings are rarely found intact with the majority of wine funnels available on the market today.
