  • A Diminutive Gilt Copper Alloy (Bronze) Head of a Crowned Buddha, Thailand Ayutthaya Period, Circa 1680

     

    Depicted in the ‘Phra Chao Song Khruang’ manner (Lord Wearing Ornaments), the head of Buddha adorned with an ornate & partially gilded crown / diadem rising to a domed ushnisha.  The oval face effecting a dignified, yet meditative expression with arched eyebrows above petal shaped eyes, an angular nose & smiling full lips, sided by an elongated earlobe terminating to a ‘flower-bud’ finial, all bearing traces of original gilding. Loss noted to one earlobe & casting to back of the head.

    Raised overall upon a later bronze plinth base. Height of head, 4.75” high. Overall height, 7”.

    Similar examples have been offered & sold at Bonham's, Christie's & Sotheby's.
