A 19th Century Patinated Grand Tour Bronze of The Virgin Mary & Christ Child, Circa 1870
The well executed cast bronze figure of the Holy Mother shown adorned with a crown, cradling the Christ Child who is holding a dove, while she holds a lily stock in her right hand - signifying purity. Demonstrating fine proportions and exhibiting a scarcely seen ‘Herculaneum Black’ patina overall and mounted atop a carved fruitwood (possibly olivewood) plinth base. (This patina was named for the surface found on bronzes unearthed in Herculaneum in the 18th century).
Overall measurements, 18” high x 4.75” wide x 3.75” deep. Height of bronze, 13”.
